Has The Great British Bake Off inspired your mini bakers? Discover our picks of the best kids’ classes and bakeries in London.
Since the launch of The Great British Bake Off in 2010, Britain’s baking mania has reached a sugary high. Our national love of The Great British Bake Off – 9.2 million people tuned in for the 2020 GBBO final, Channel’s 4 biggest ever rating – has propelled things even further.
Baking is a wonderful obsession, and definitely one we should share with the next generation. So, whether you intend on getting messy in the kitchen with your little ones or passing it over to the professionals, we’ve put together a selection of the best products, classes and bakeries in London for you and the kids to explore.
Avenue Cookery School, Fulham
Based in Fulham, Avenue Cookery School‘s Bake Off Class for Kids is the perfect opportunity for your little ones to learn some baking and decorating skills while using their imagination and creativity. They offer a choice between baking delicious cupcakes and buttery shortbread – with lots of time for decoration, of course!
Cookie Crumbles
The original kids baking company, Cookie Crumbles know what they’re doing. Check out their children’s baking courses and parties, or branch out and challenge your little ones to one of their proper cooking courses. And, if you’re short on time, pick up one of their super easy baking mixes.
Biscuiteers, Battersea and Notting Hill
Biscuiteers’ enchanting shop front says it all – a cosy, magical setting where kids can enjoy the delights of biscuit decorating. David Beckham is a fan, and seeing as classes are for all ages, so are we! The best bit? They now have two boutiques – in Notting Hill and on the Northcote Road – so entertaining your children couldn’t be easier!
Bread Ahead
This is the perfect activity to keep the kids entertained at the weekends. Bread Ahead – first made famous at their Borough Market stall and those donuts – now offer a Junior Virtual Baking Club! Every Saturday morning at 10am and 12pm, they go live from the bakery and teach some favourite recipes to little bakers via Zoom, from polar bear cupcakes to gingerbread.
Lily Vanilli, Hoxton
Another great escape when you’re craving something sweet, Lily Vanilli is a small East London bakery with some truly mighty treats. One of the most sought-after artisan bakers in the capital, her glorious, towering designs of iced loveliness will be just the thing to get your mini baker’s imagination whirling! You can also order home kits to get baking with your little ones.
Violet Bakery, Hackney
Take the kids for a treat at the five-star rated Violet Cakes bakery-café that started out life as a humble market stall. Now, owner Claire Ptak has over 216,000 followers on Instagram and is known for her limited-edition buttercream icings on birthday cakes, cupcakes, whoopie pies and biscuits, changing with the seasons. All are baked with organic and low intervention ingredients, like Madagascan vanilla pods and pure cane molasses.
The Great British Bake Off is on every Tuesday on Channel 4.
