Home birth is not an ‘elitist service’

TV presenter and mother of three, Davina McCall, spoke out passionately at a conference about the right to choose a home birth.

Davina, who had all three of her children at home, praised the Independent Midwives’ group at the Birthrights Dignity Forum, which has been hit hard by its inability to access adequate Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII) for their members to practice in the UK.

The lack of insurance and the Government’s failure to come up with an alternative for self-employed midwives, means that thousands of womens’ choice for a home birth are being compromised.

Independent Midwives attend home births and practice outside of the NHS. They are often turned to by women who have had previous bad experiences of hospital births. Davina said that having a home birth was not only for those who could easily afford it and nor is it an elitist service.
